What people ask most

What are your opening and closing times?

We're open every day, from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. The gate on the highway closes at 3:45, since it takes about 15 minutes to reach the ticket office. If you are already inside, you can stay until 4:30.

What is San Gervasio?

It is the most important archaeological site in Cozumel and a key place for understanding the island’s Maya history.

Is it associated with Ixchel?

Yes, historical tradition links Cozumel and San Gervasio with pilgrimage to Ixchel, but we explain it with care and respect.

What is that arch?

It was the gateway to the sanctuary from the north. It stands on a sacbé, one of the site’s white roads.

What are sacbés?

Those white roads are called sacbés. They connected the different groups of buildings.

Why may I not climb the structures?

Because they are archaeological heritage and we must protect them so that they can be preserved.

Did the Maya disappear?

No. We say the ancient Maya to refer to those who built these sites, but Maya culture is still alive.

May I take photos?

Yes, following the site’s rules and avoiding actions that put its heritage at risk.

What is the “Sacred Pathway”?

It is how Cozumel Parks recognizes San Gervasio’s historic and heritage value within the narrative of the Sacred Island.

How much time do I need?

45 minutes.

Is there somewhere to eat or use the restroom?

The Visitor Center has a snack bar with drinks and light food, and restrooms. There are no services or water sales inside the archaeological site: I recommend using the restroom and bringing water before entering.

Who is responsible for the site?

The archaeological site is under the custody of INAH. Cozumel Parks manages the Visitor Center and access.
